If there’s one word that seems to come up in every piece of advice about reaching your goals…fitness, business, health etc, it’s consistency.
It’s the golden rule. The one word everyone repeats like it’s simple. Just be consistent.
But if you’ve ever actually tried to stay consistent with anything, you’ll know it’s not that easy. I yo-yo dieted for years and the biggest thing that seemed to be an issue for me was lack of consistency. Motivation fades, life gets in the way, and that simple habit you promised yourself you’d keep turns into something you can’t stick to for more than two weeks.
This year, though, I’ve finally cracked what consistency actually looks like in real life. Because for the first time, I’ve stayed consistent with my workouts…without a personal trainer. And if I’m honest, it’s changed everything. Not just how I look, but how I feel, think, and handle life.
Here’s what actually helped me stay consistent…not perfectly, but consistently enough to finally see real progress.
Start Smaller Than You Think You Should
When I first started training seriously again, I had to let go of that all or nothing mindset. I used to set unrealistic goals, five or six sessions a week, super strict routines, and then beat myself up when I didn’t stick to them.
This time, I started smaller. Three strength sessions a week, and one shorter cardio day. Initially I felt it wasn’t enough, but I told myself I’d increase after a month of being consistent. And because it was doable, I didn’t dread it. It fit into my life instead of fighting against it.
Consistency doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from doing enough, repeatedly, until it becomes a habit.
Stop Relying on Motivation
I can’t tell you how many mornings I’ve sat at my desk knowing I’m suppose to be getting ready for the gym, thinking… “I really don’t want to do this.” What I realized, is that motivation is unreliable. It’s discipline that keeps you consistent.
What helped me was making the gym non-negotiable, like brushing my teeth. I didn’t wait to “feel like it.” I treated it like an appointment with myself. Because that’s what it is.
It made it so much easier, because the more you show up, the easier it gets. Eventually, not going feels more uncomfortable than going.
Make It Personal
When I stopped working with a personal trainer, I had to take ownership of my own goals. There was no one to text me reminders or push me through reps. It was just me.
I realized I wasn’t training to impress anyone or hit a specific number…I was training to feel capable and strong. To feel proud of myself. That shift changed everything.
When you attach consistency to something deeper that genuinely matters, it stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like self respect.
Track the Progress You Can’t See in Photos
Everyone loves a transformation photo, but what’s really motivating is noticing how you feel. How much more energy you have. How you lift heavier. How you recover faster. How your confidence creeps back in.
Those moments are what keep you showing up. They’re the quiet reminders that it’s working, even when you don’t see it in the mirror yet.
The reason I’ve stayed consistent this time is because I built a routine that actually fits my life. I train in the mornings when my mind is clear. I go to the same gym. I keep the same playlist.
It’s not glamorous, but it removes friction. I don’t give myself time to debate it, I just do it.
Staying consistent with my fitness this year has changed more than my body. It’s built resilience. It’s taught me to trust myself. It’s shown me that I’m capable of following through on anything.
And that’s the real point of consistency. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about proving to yourself, over and over, that you can show up.
So if you’re trying to reach a goal, stop focusing on doing everything perfectly. Focus on doing it regularly. Start smaller, build systems, be honest with yourself, and give it time.
Consistency isn’t the secret. It’s the skill. When you see yourself getting stronger or better, it makes turning up so much easier.
5 Skincare Swaps To Make In Your 40s
Your 40s are hard enough as it is…letting skincare make it even harder wasn’t on my list. One day everything’s fine, and the next you’re wondering why your usual moisturiser suddenly feels useless, your glow's gone (even though you just had a vacation), and your exfoliator all of a sudden seems too harsh for your skin.

Thank you for this!
I relate 100 percent.
I try not to miss a day but when I do, I don't beat myself up mentally like I did in the past. I am being mindful that my body in my late 50's needs a break every now and then.
