If you’re anything like me, you’ve got at least a handful of makeup products that you’re just not too sure how long you’ve had them. So unsure…that a few of them could even be discontinued. But here’s the thing no one wants to admit - this very same makeup, could be expired.
I get asked this constantly on YouTube: “Does makeup expire?”
The short answer: Yes. And using expired makeup can cause more damage than you think.
Let’s break it down.
THE ACTUAL DANGERS OF EXPIRED MAKEUP
Makeup is formulated to stay stable and safe for a certain amount of time, and once that time runs out, the doors open for bacteria, oxidation, and ingredient breakdown.
Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: Throw it after 3 months. These are bacterial breeding grounds. If your eyes are itchy, red, or you’ve had a stye, it might be that expired mascara.
Foundations & Concealers: Liquid formulas typically last 12–18 months, but if it smells weird, separates, or has changed colour…bin it immediately.
Lipsticks & Glosses: You’ll get about 12–24 months. But if it smells like crayons or has gone dry or gloopy, it’s done. I literally just threw a whole bunch of Tom Ford lipsticks the other day (it was difficult!) because they had a weird smell, like crayons.
Powders (blush, eyeshadow, bronzer, etc.): Generally last 2 years, but keep an eye on the surface…if it gets hard or looks dusty, it’s time.
Pencils (lip, eye): These last longer…up to 2 years, especially if you sharpen regularly. But if they tug or feel dry then toss them.
RED FLAGS
Even if the date hasn’t technically passed, these are your signs to let go:
It smells weird (musty, sour, chemical-y)
It’s changed texture or consistency
The colour has shifted or oxidised
You can’t remember when you bought it
It’s been in a hot car, sweaty gym bag, or humid bathroom for months
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU KEEP USING IT ANYWAY?
Skin irritation, breakouts, clogged pores, eye infections, and allergic reactions…just to name a few. What’s even worse, is you might not even realise it’s your makeup causing the problem. I’ve had so many women tell me their skincare isn’t working when really, it’s the expired base product they’re slapping on every day that’s doing the damage.
HOW TO KEEP TRACK
Label new products with a sharpie: Write the month & year you opened it.
Store smart: Avoid humidity, heat, and direct sunlight.
Do regular purges: If you haven’t touched it in a year, ask yourself why. (And no, “just in case” doesn’t count.)
CLEAN YOUR TOOLS
Your makeup might not even be the issue…your brushes and sponges could be the problem. Clean them weekly…you’ll thank me later.
I’m hoping this newsletter makes you want to clear that makeup drawer out. You know what to do.

You know if you think about it, it’s crazy how much we pay for mascara if we have to cycle them out every 3 months. Guess I’ll only be buying minis from now on.
Thanks Nina!! Needed this! Time to say goodbye to my mascara from Jan this year! Yikes!
