If there’s one thing I’ve learned since moving into my 40’s, it’s that the makeup formulas you loved in your 20s and 30s don’t always do you any favors in your 40s. Skin changes…texture, elasticity, hydration levels, and the wrong formulas can highlight everything you’re trying to hide, soften or smooth out. I see so many people over 40 frustrated that their makeup isn’t lasting, or looking heavy, or it sinks into lines, and most of the time, the issue isn’t the technique, it’s the formula. Here’s what actually works when you hit your 40s.
Foundations: Lightweight and Hydrating Over Heavy Coverage
This is the biggest shift you need to make. In your 20s, you can get away with thick, matte foundations because your skin is naturally plump and smooth. In your 40s, that same foundation can end up looking dry, heavy, and settles into every fine line. Instead, go for lightweight, hydrating formulas like skin tints, light to medium coverage foundations that you can build up, or foundations with a natural radiant finish. These even out your skin tone without masking your skin completely, so it looks fresh rather than flat.
If you need more coverage, only build it where you need it instead of layering so much of it on a full face. Spot concealing over problem areas works much better than caking on foundation everywhere.
