A while back I had a friend over. I poured a glass of wine for her, and what she said about it has stayed with me ever since. It’s a small story, but it says a lot about the things we all pretend to like but secretly don’t. I’ve got a whole list, and the wine comes first.
After 25 years in beauty, I’ve spent a lot of time around people talking about what they love. Some of it is real, and some of it is what they think they’re supposed to love. After a while you start to spot the difference…
1. Expensive wine
A friend came over a while back. She usually loves super expensive wine, the kind most people can’t get their hands on, the kind you expect to be blown away by because of the price. I definitely didn’t have any of that at home. I had a $20 bottle that I like and think is great, which is exactly why I keep it at home. I poured her a glass and said nothing about it. She had no idea what it was or what it cost, and after a sip she said, “omg this wine is amazing.”
A $20 bottle blew her away. It showed me that sometimes people don’t love the actual thing they rave about, they love that it costs so much. I’ve tasted the kind of wine she drinks when we’ve been out and it’s nothing special. Nothing that hugely stands out in comparison to a cheaper one. I’m not saying everything expensive is not worth it…I’ve had the odd glass of very expensive wine that was better. But my point is, not everything expensive is amazing.
2. Cold plunges
Some people really do love them, and that’s fine. But plenty of others post the video, say they feel amazing afterward, and quietly dread getting back in the next morning. If you like it, keep going. If you’re only doing it because everyone else seems to, you’re allowed to get out and just not do it.
“Sometimes people don’t love the actual thing, they love that it costs so much.”
The next four are the beauty ones, and they’re where I have the most to say after 25 years. That part’s for paid subscribers!
