They’ve always inspire me as well and I’m not a makeup artist. I started painting as teen because of Vogue. It was how a fat, shy girl from Indiana could connect to the vision, artistry and environment masters like them created.
I love your brute honesty and it’s totally awesome and appreciated. In no way am I a make up artist or anything close so the insight into the true creativity of picking up a make up brush is almost magical- at least that’s how I felt after reading your article. And yes it’s sad that’s everything is about figures and number of likes, it’s so impersonal, it feels like the human element the previous OG s captured beautifully is lost.. but you are amazing so respect 🫡 🤗🤗❤️
Unfortunately everyone is trying to be a make up artist without the creativity or understanding of the brush. The face is the canvas and the makeup and brushes the paint.
I remember being OBSESSED with Kevin Aucoin’s “Making Faces” book. It was magical! Lisa Eldridge, aside from her drool-worthy lip colors, is also an ARTIST, whose medium is makeup. It is easy to tell who is an artist vs. a practitioner.
How interesting, Nina. You have done the graft and we can all admire and appreciate your craft. You’re so right, most younger people all look similar, nothing stands out to me on their IG posts. I love that you’re not afraid to advise on mature skin, darker skin tones, dry and textured skin. You are real and that’s a rare quality to have.

So glad you agree! Thank you!

I still have that on my shelf!
I have in a box somewhere! I worked in a bookstore and had the whole book memorized before finally buying it. It is a fantastic book.

Thank you so much Juliet!
