The Only Makeup Steps That Actually Matter After 40
At this stage - I’m assuming you’re either about to reach your 40’s or you’re already here, in which case…welcome - I think most of us have realised that doing more with makeup doesn’t automatically mean looking better. In fact, after 40, it usually does the opposite. Skin changes, texture changes, how makeup sits changes, and the routine that worked ten or fifteen years ago usually needs adjusting. Not because anything is wrong, but because skin just behaves differently now.
What I’ve learned over time (both professionally and personally) is that makeup after 40 is less about piling on steps and more about choosing the right ones. When those are done well, everything else becomes optional.
The first step that really matters is skin prep. Not an overly complicated routine, not layers upon layers, but skin that feels calm, hydrated, and balanced. Makeup will always exaggerate dryness, irritation, or dehydration. If skin feels comfortable before you start, your base already looks better. This is where slowing down helps, letting products absorb properly instead of rushing straight into makeup.
The second step that matters is how you approach coverage. Heavy, full coverage is usually where makeup starts to look obvious. After 40, targeted coverage makes a much bigger difference. Evening out the center of the face, softening redness, and letting the rest of the skin show through keeps everything looking lighter and more natural. This is where makeup starts to look intentional rather than done.
