One thing that every pro makeup artist is good at, is thinking outside the box. We need to, because if we forget something on a shoot or client booking, we have no choice but to create what we’ve forgotten by utilizing what we have - all while looking calm and acting like this was the plan the whole time!
Throughout my career, I’ve had several occasions where I’m asked to create something (if you’re smart, you ask ahead of time what look you’d be creating or even better, have a mood board sent to you…but this can backfire in some cases such as what follows) completely different from what was planned, and you may not have packed what you need for it so you need to think outside the box and figure out within seconds how to create it.
As much as I remember many private panic attacks in such instances, it’s also what makes you a great makeup artist. This is the type of experience that no course can give you. You learn to utilize the tools and products you have to create what you are envisioning. Making mistakes and learning on the job were some of the best parts of my career, they made me confident in what I do and taught me that there is always a way.
So here is my list of favorite tricks that I’ve learned along the way. These are the kind of tricks you need to try to believe just how good they are.
