Dry looking makeup is one of the most annoying makeup problems because it can happen even when you’ve used products you normally love and usually work on you really well. I’ve dealt with it myself…the foundation that usually makes me look healthy can randomly look tight, concealer can start showing every tiny line, and the whole face can look a bit flat and older than it actually is.

I think most people immediately blame the foundation, and sometimes the formula is the problem, but a lot of the time it’s either the skin prep, the amount of product, or what’s been layered on top. Makeup rarely looks dry for no reason. It’s usually a combination of dehydrated skin, too much powder, not enough time between skincare and makeup, or using products that don’t exactly work together.

The good thing is that you don’t always have to take everything off and start again. There are a few small fixes that can make dry makeup look much better quickly, and then there are a few changes you can make before makeup so it doesn’t keep happening.

Press Over The Skin With A Damp Sponge

This is always the first thing I do when foundation looks dry, heavy, or like it’s sitting on top of the skin. Take a clean damp sponge (I usually spray a hydrating spray on the sponge to dampen it) and gently press it over the areas that look dry. Don’t add more foundation to it. The point is to soften what’s already there and pick up any excess product. It’s like melting the powder in.
