Somewhere along the way, self care turned into another thing on my to-do list. Like if I’m not waking up at 6am, writing in my journal, doing my full 7 step skincare routine, drinking warm lemon water, and squeezing in a Pilates class before I start my work day, I’m failing at life.
The whole glow up/self care hype lead us to believe we’ll gain confidence, success, and be the best version of ourselves. But realistically, at what point did it start feeling like another form of hustle culture?
I can’t help but wonder…If my self care routine is stressing me out, is it even self care?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately…especially when it comes to the beauty industry, where we’re constantly being told to do more, and constantly shown new trends that promise to better our lives, making us more zen. More skincare ingredients. More treatments. More routines. In all honesty, I love my beauty rituals. But I’ve realized there’s a fine line between taking care of myself and feeling like I’m just trying to keep up.
