This month’s read was First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston, and I’ll be honest, it’s one of those books that pulls you in before you even realize it. You know that feeling when you start a book and you plan to read just one chapter, but before you know it, you’re 3 chapters in? This is that kind of book.
The story follows a woman called Evie Porter…except that’s not her real name. She’s living this perfect small town life, a boyfriend, house, everything tied up neatly with a bow…but none of it’s real. She’s working under an alias, for a mysterious man, and the whole thing slowly starts to unravel.
It’s the kind of book where you’re constantly questioning who’s telling the truth. Every chapter reveals just enough to make you want more, and before you know it, you’re halfway through wondering how she’s going to pull it off.
It’s sharp, fast, and twisty without trying too hard. It’s also refreshing to read a thriller that isn’t all doom and gloom. There’s tension, but it’s fun. It’s the kind of book that reminds you why thrillers became addictive in the first place.
There’s a part in the middle where it slows down a bit, and I found myself losing focus for a few chapters, but it picks back up again.
If you love shows like ‘You’ or books that mix mystery with character driven storytelling, then this is for you. It’s easy to read, smartly written, and full of moments where you think…I didn’t see that coming. It’s also part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club, which by the way is a great club! I’ve already got my next book ready; Gone before goodbye written by Harlan Coben and Reese Witherspoon.
And if you’re trying to get back into reading after a break, this is a good one to start with because it’s fast, entertaining, and doesn’t need your full concentration to enjoy.
It’s not a deep or overly complex book, it’s just a good story told well. It’s the kind of book that gives you that satisfying escape, where you can switch off for a while and just get lost in someone else’s chaos.
And if you’ve read it already…can we talk about the twist near the end? I didn’t see it coming at all.

Looking for it and ordering both books now! I had other books planed first but your description and appeal for this book is undeniable and riveting. Can’t wait to start! I’ll let you know how they go! Thanks for the recommendations! And who can resist a Reese Witherspoon Book Club rec.?!
Glad you enjoyed it, Nina! And YESSSS did NOT see that last twist coming!
