Foundation gets a bit tricky after 40. Skin changes, texture shows up in places it didn’t before, and a formula that worked for years can start sitting differently. Full coverage can feel heavy and settle into lines, and super sheer doesn’t always even anything out and may not give you the type of coverage you need. Medium coverage is the sweet spot, and these are the five I’d tell you to try.
I’ve done makeup for 25 years, a lot of it on mature skin, and I’m 46 myself, so I’m not guessing at what a foundation does on skin like yours. Every one of these gives medium coverage that evens out your skin without looking like a mask.
1. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Luminous Silk has been around for more than 25 years! It’s been a makeup artist favorite for of that time. It was reformulated recently, and I think the new version is actually much better, especially for skin over 40. The new formula has glycerin and niacinamide added, so it feels more hydrating, and it’s a little more dewy than the old one, which leaned soft matte. You still get the smooth, medium coverage Luminous Silk is known for, and it blends easily. If you want a bit more coverage anywhere, build it in thin layers instead of putting on one thick one.
2. NARS Light Reflecting Foundation
This one is water-based and light, with medium coverage you can build. It has a blurring effect that softens the look of texture without going flat or powdery. It feels like skin instead of product, which is what I look for on mature skin. Use one to two pumps and warm it on your fingertips before you blend it in. NARS makes a matching setting powder, but I’d only use it where you get shiny, not all over your face.
3. Hourglass Illusion Luminous Glow Foundation
This is one of my recent favorites. Hourglass Illusion is the creamiest one on this list. It started out as their Illusion Skin Tint and became a full foundation with more coverage, and it has SPF 30 built in. It’s medium coverage with a real glow, and it’s moisturizing, so it’s a good one if your skin runs dry. Warm a pea-sized amount on your fingertips, press it in, then buff it out with a brush. The SPF is a nice bonus, but it doesn’t replace your actual sunscreen.
“Medium coverage evens out your skin without looking like a mask.”
The last two are a brand new foundation that only just launched and a long-wear glow from Dior. I’m also sharing how I apply medium coverage on mature skin, because the right foundation only gets you halfway. That part’s for paid subscribers.
